What It’s Like To Sleep On A Glacier

November 05, 2018

Imagine having the opportunity to sleep on a glacier. Not many people can say that theyâ??ve had this unique experience. The Sheldon Chalet allows guests to sleep in the middle of a glacier without having to sacrifice any comforts that they are used too. This is what itâ??s like to sleep on a glacier at the Sheldon Chalet.

The Unique Location

This chalet is located about ten miles from Denali National Parkâ??s summit. The area was discovered by Don Sheldon. He was a glacier pilot and claimed the land over 60 years ago. In the past, the area could only be accessed by mountain climbers. Fortunately, the Sheldon Chalet has been made easily accessible so visitors can see some of this area that just wasnâ??t possible before.

What To Expect

The chalet itself is located on five acres of land and there are five bedrooms that can sleep up to 10 guests. Since the area is very cold, measures have been taken to ensure the warmth of each guest. Radiant heaters can be found in each room and thereâ??s a Tulikivi fireplace on the second floor that keeps guests warm. All of the rooms offer spectacular views of the Alaska Range. This is because the Sheldon Chalet is located on top of a granite peak thatâ??s around 6,000 above the Don Sheldon Amphitheater.

The Experience

As soon as guests arrive they will feel welcomed. They will get to enjoy champagne and an assortment of seafood such as halibut, prawns, salmon, oysters and crabs. Once theyâ??ve checked into their room they can either relax or take part in some of the areaâ??s many activities. These include sledding, skiing or a helicopter tour. Guests can also go on a Heli Picnic where they will be flown to the Sheldon Mountain House where they can enjoy a guided tour and a picnic. During the flight to the Sheldon Mountain House, guests can see both the Susitna Valley and the Great Gorge.

One of the big perks to staying at this chalet is that the area is pretty isolated. It can only be accessed by air. The chalet is all-inclusive and costs $2,300 per night. In addition to the accommodations, this does include all food and beverages, access to the sauna and the flightseeing tour thatâ??s part of the transit both to and from the chalet.
