October 26, 2017

Alaska is filled with many glaciers thanks to it's cold climate. To see one is a truly a unique experience. Glaciers can be difficult to get too so it's important that you choose the best method. Here's how you should go about seeing some of Alaska's best glaciers.

Matanuska Glacier

How To Get To It: Drive

This roadside glacier is just a 2 ?½ hour drive from Anchorage. It's located on Glenn Highway. There are plenty of places along the highway to stop and pull over to see this massive, 4 mile wide glacier. Water can be seen flowing out of it and it's overall rather impressive to look at. For those that are feeling adventurous, there are rafting trips and glacier hikes offered by local guiding companies.

Ruth Glacier

How To See It: By plane

The glacial ice here is a whopping 3,800 feet deep. Ruth Glacier is located near Mt. McKinley and you can get an impressive view of both by plane. The gorge of the glacier has sheer granite walls that are 5,000 feet and it's very hard to take all of this in by foot. A flight tour is your best bet in order to see everything that Ruth Glacier and the surrounding areas have to offer.

Spencer Glacier

How To See It: Railroad

The only way that you can see this glacier is by railroad. It's worth the experience as there are a lot of gorgeous views along the way. Glacier Bay National Park

How To See It: By boat

There are over 50 named glaciers located here. There's a lot of wildlife to see as well. As many as 400,000 visitors to this park come by cruise ship. One of the most popular glaciers located at the park is the Margerie Glacier as it's rather large in size and you can also see the Grand Pacific Glacier from here as well.

Mendenhall Glacier
